Phuket Day 2 – Phi Phi Islands

Our second day promised a lot of fun and some really good memories. Simba Sea Trips was highly recommended by TripAdvisor members and we booked two tours with them, the first being Phi-Phi Islands. The tour is run by Geoff and Jenny who are British and Australian respectively and safely chose a place halfway from their respective countries to live after they married. Everybody on the tour seemed to think they were wonderful hosts and we all ended up being very good friends. The tour included pickup and dropoff from hotel, breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, life jackets and snorkeling equipment and was to include a trip to the famous Maya Bay (of Leo Caprio’s ‘The Beach’ movie). We stopped at different islands throughout the day and Sanika had a BLAST playing in the water. She easily forgot and forgave her previous day’s fun at the Patong beach. The excursion took us away from the touristy Phuket and into the exotic picture-postcard type locales in the Andamans. Here are some photos from the trip:

Lunch was served at ‘The Beach’ (Maya Bay) where we all were glad to follow in the footsteps of Leonardo Di Caprio.

The day was also very important in my life as I did something that I had never done before – and nothing so adventurous for the past few years. I don’t know how to swim but did not want to miss out on the fun ohters were having. I mentioned it to Jenny and she encouraged me to snorkel with her. She actually held my hand while we headed towards the middle of the ocean and gave me an experience to remember. What I saw beneath, I could not capture (did I mention I do not even know how to swim, leave along having an under-water camera?) and neither can I attempt to describe the marvels of nature that unfolded before me under the sea, but I can only tell you that what I saw will forever remain with me, that I was far off from this world and into a very different one when I was looking underneath and that I cannot wait to do it again. And since everyone wants to get a glimpse of the Nemo fish, it was only proper that I try my luck at it – and I did discover Nemo! Poor Rohit could not do it, although he wanted to do it as badly as I did. He has a moustache and the water kept getting into his mask because of his moustache.

Me (mask on) and Jenny of Simba Sea Trips

Geoff and Jenny and their team of seamen were seasoned enough to know the best spots for Snorkeling and dropped the anchor of the boat right in the middle of nowhere to give us a chance to snorkel at the best spots. We also snorkeled at every island beach that we stopped at. Tired after swimming and snorkeling the entire day, we came back delighted with our choice for the excursion and on making new friends from all over the world. Sanika fell asleep on the way back.

1st Day in Phuket – Patong Beach

We arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok and boarded our connecting flight to Phuket. We were greeted by the now familiar (after traveling Thai Airways) Thai greeting of ‘Sawasdee’ (meaning Hello) which my daughter Sanika had learned by heart and which got her some special attention throughout Thailand.

‘Sawasdee’ sign at the Phuket Airport

At Phuket airport, we booked a Toyota Camry which took us to the beautiful Amari Coral Beach Resort. Amari Coral Beach Resort is owned by the Amari Group of Hotels which has some really good properties all over Thailand. The resort was ranked 1st among all hotels at Patong Beach area and looked exactly what we wished for.

Our room at the Amari, Phuket

The rooms promised a fabulous view of the ocean and is a short walk away from the Patong beach which is the main beach of Phuket. Since we were with a child, we did not want any place too far from the main pulse of the city and chose the Amari over other fantastic options like the Momtri hotels. But we also did not want a hotel bang on the noisy Patong beach road (Holiday Inn is a great choice for those who do) and Amari Coral proved to be a calm and serene haven which gave us views of the ocean as well as the nearby Patong beach (see below for the view from our balcony). The hotel is nestled amongst the national forest area of Phuket and is a destination of sorts, in itself. More on that on the 3rd day.

After resting ourselves in the afternoon, and having a lunch of a wood-fired Pizza from Amari’s famous Italian restaurant – La Gritta, we started towards the beach at about 4 p.m. The Amari has a private, guarded road towards Patong beach.

The road takes a turn and we get a full view of the beach

After a lot of fun on the beach, as the daylight got dimmer and dimmer, we took off to see the shops on the pther side of the Beach Road. As we were all hungry by now, we bought some freshly sliced watermelon and Sanika had a Chocolate-Banana Crepe from one of the numerous street stalls. Then, we proceeded to Soi Post Office my agenda for the day – buying Benjarong. Since I am an avid collector for my home, my only ‘must buy’ in Thailand was the famous Thai Royal Porcelain or the five-color and 18k gold pottery ‘Benjarong’ which was once used exclusively by the King of Thailand. Since our itinerary in Bangkok did not leave time for the Rivercity Mall which houses the Government recognized Benjarong store, I planned to do it in Phuket itself since the prices remain the same in trusted shops. ‘Siam Ceramics’ in ‘Soi Post Office’ (the lane next to the Post Office on Patong Beach Road – hard to miss) was my destination and I saw some stuff on sale which made it possible for me to spend lesser than I had budgeted. I had budgeted 4500 Thai baht for a souvenir teacup and saucer but I got a miniature tea set for 3000 THB.

While I  made my decision in the shop, Sanika amused herself with the friendly women of the Thai massage parlor as they painted her nails. We had given up hopes of getting a Thai massage done since we did not want to leave Sanika under the care of a baby-sitter in a foreign land, but that was about to change. We asked the women if they would keep her engaged while we took a massage from them and they readily agreed. We fixed on the day after tomorrow for our massage and shopped for a beach towel and a cover-up dress for tomorrow’s excursion followed by an Indian dinner in the same lane. By the time we returned, the Beach road had turned into a dazzling display of all sorts of toys, goodies, knick-knacks, fake designer stuff etc. Since we were well-warned that shopping is much cheaper in Bangkok, we wore blinkers on our eyes, turned our backs on all the shops and went back to our hotel.

White House Fashions – Michelle Obama’s Fashion Statements

I have been pleased with Michelle Obama’s sense of sophisticated fashion throughout the Obama campaign. If I leave out the two inauguration dresses, most of it has been what I can myself wear. Add to it her perfectly set bob hairstyle and you will see that she definitely looks her part as a young First Lady who likes to dress up well. More reasons why I can identify with her are that she is seen in public with her daughters (which is a rare thing indeed) and shares my passion of dressing up daughters. All in all, they seem to be one loving and good looking first family.

Michelle Obama Michelle Obama

People all over are commending her efforts with regards to her looks that have helped her become much more agreeable to Christian Americans. Being the first African-American First Lady does, no doubt, come with its own set of issues to be handled and the lady certainly seems to be doing very well in this matter. But more than her dresses or her hairstyle, it is how well she carries herself and with a gentle, subdued and dignified way that has helped her make her way into the hearts of everyone. And that actually goes for Barack Obama as well. The couple look so down-to-earth you wouldn’t know who they are except for the fact that they are today the most popular couple in the world.

Michelle Obama

Michelle’s simple yet chic dresses, her classy overcoats seen throughout fall and winter and her keen sense of color and cuts have resulted in her being compared to the fashionable First Lady Jackie Kennedy. Although one should not ‘compare‘ them, for they are worlds (and styles) apart, Obama does stand a close second when it comes to listing First Ladies in order of how fashionable they were or are.

Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama's Inaugral GownI was initially disappointed with Michelle’s Obama’s choice for her dress on the inauguration day and even more with her gala ball gown later that night. There was nothing wrong with the dresses in themselves. It was just the sparkly look of the day dress and the entire silhouette and cut of the evening gown did not agree with me. You can see the dresses and their details more clearly in the article we did on her at Dot Com Women. It was not something I would have picked for myself or for her if I had a chance to do so. But I soon did away with all the said disappointment when I saw her usual countenance – her smart and chic profile to which her bob only adds to. I am glad to not be in the shoes of those ‘celebrity fashion bloggers’ who have to write nasty things about people whose fashion styles do not agree with their own. My approach is more that of any human being which allows for differences in individual tastes and styles. There certainly can be more than one ways of dressing up and looking good. Besides, the world would look dreary if everybody dressed like me! And so, in my opinion, the first lady, in her own sophisticated style, looked resplendent and glowing with happiness on that important day even in those two dresses that I can never rave about.

And I am looking forward to see more of her style statements as the First Lady and certainly intend to keep track of them. Seldom do we find such well-dressed women to look up to, who are also a balance of grace, motherhood and everything ladylike.

Bringing on 2009

Christmas 2008 and New Year 2009 – the two events I could hardly wait to celebrate. They were to be my first celebrations in the beautiful house of my dreams that got completed after about 2 years. But as luck would have it, nothing went the way I had planned. My MIL got seriously ill (had a recurring GI Bleed) on the 23rd and was hospitalized. I had all but started baking for Christmas when this happened. We remained with her till the 14th of January when she finally came back home after a series of endoscopies and angiographies. It was then time to think of our Christmas tree standing beautifully decked up (and unappreciated) and the stash of gifts lying beneath it (most of them for my daughter Sanika).

Things were better for Sanika though. Her annual preschool Christmas bonanza program at school had been postponed and had been rescheduled on the 13th of January. And between trips to the hospital and sending fresh juice for my now recovering MIL and other household chores, I had somehow managed to take Sanika to school everyday so that she did not miss out on the rehearsals and performed with her class at the function now christened ‘Fledgeling Fiesta’. She performed ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ and really couldn’t make out the difference between a 25th December morn and a 13th January one. And we were glad she couldn’t for on the 15th of January, we decided that my MIL being come back to home now, my husband should take her directly from school to open her Christmas presents and I was to stay with my MIL as she couldn’t be left all alone yet. Here are pictures of Sanika’s school performance and her ‘gift-opening’ ceremony that took place a day later in her school uniform and a fresh wound on her knee.

Gone were my plans for a special dinner and loads of baked goodies, hot cocoa on the terrace – we did not even put out a wreath on the front door! Gone were my new year resolutions of launching new websites, updating my blog daily and writing a journal – I was without a computer for several days! And yet, on the 25th of December when the doctors pronounced my MIL safe and cured, I felt Christmas hadn’t been disappointing at all. On the 31st, she came home from the hospital (she was hospitalized again with the same complaint re-occuring within a week) and we were all relieved to have such a wonderful new year. The entire episode humbled me with regards to our expectations. We may plan as much or as little, there is certainly a thing such as fate that actually takes care of everything in our lives. And if one thing does go wrong, something else definitely comes up to make the day bright for you – albeit you might not see it in that light initially.

For now, as long as this episode is spoken of in the past tense, I am glad to acknowledge it as a very humbling and inspiring Christmas and New Year. I am resuming my work full-fledged from tomorrow and hoping that 2009 blesses us all with great health and good luck.

Happy New Year!
